5.3.2 Strength Evaluation
Resistance and safety factors, and , reflect variations in determining strength of members and connections, such as uncertainty in theory and variations in material properties and dimensions. If an investigation of an existing structure indicates that there are variations in material properties or dimensions significantly greater than those anticipated in new construction, the engineer of record should consider the use of more conservative values.
5.3.2a Rivets
The values of and provided in Table A-5.3.1 for ASTM A502 Grade 1 rivets are based on the rivet design provisions of the 1999 LRFD Specification (AISC, 2000b).
