The minor-axis shear strength of I-shaped members and channel flanges is the shear yield strength if flange slenderness, bf/2tfb_{f} / 2 t_{f} for I-shapes or bf/tfb_{f} / t_{f} for channels, does not exceed the limit 1.10kvE/Fy1.10 \sqrt{k_{v} E / F_{y}}, or the shear buckling strength, otherwise. Because shear post-buckling strength is not included for these cases due to lack of experimental verification, the shear buckling coefficient, Cv2C_{v 2}, from Section G2.2 is used. The plate buckling coefficient, kvk_{v}, is 1.2 due to the presence of a free edge.

The maximum plate slenderness of all rolled shapes is bf/tf=bf/2tf=13.8b_f/t_f=b_f/2t_f=13.8. The lower bound of 1.10kvE/Fy1.10\sqrt{k_vE/F_y}, computed using Fy=100  ksiF_y=100\mathrm{\;ksi}, is 1.101.2(29,000  ksi)/100  ksi=20.51.10\sqrt{1.2(29,000\mathrm{\;ksi})/100\mathrm{\;ksi}}=20.5

The maximum plate slenderness does not exceed the lower bound of the yielding limit; therefore, Cv2=1.0C_{v 2}=1.0, except for built-up shapes with very slender flanges.
