Formulas: flexural buckling of members without slender elements

PDF page 424 · AISC 360-22

Formula 1

The column strength equations in Section E3 are the same as those in the previous editions of the LRFD Specification, with the exception of the cosmetic replacement of the slenderness term, λc=(KL/πr)Fy/E\lambda_{c}=\left(K L / \pi r\right) \sqrt{F_{y} / E}, by the more familiar slenderness ratio, KL/rK L / r, for 2005 and 2010, and by the simpler form of the slenderness ratio, Lc/rL_{c} / r, since 2016.

λc=(KL/πr)Fy/E\lambda_{c}=\left(K L / \pi r\right) \sqrt{F_{y} / E}

Formula 2

The limit between elastic and inelastic buckling is defined to be Lc/r=4.71E/FyL_{c} / r=4.71 \sqrt{E / F_{y}} or Fy/Fe=2.25F_{y} / F_{e}=2.25.

Lc/r=4.71E/FyL_{c} / r=4.71 \sqrt{E / F_{y}}

Formula 3

These are the same as Fe=0.44FyF_{e}=0.44 F_{y} that was used in the 2005 AISCSpecification.

Fe=0.44FyF_{e}=0.44 F_{y}
